ECU Health VolunTEEN Program
Volunteer Services 1/8/2025
Do you know a high school student, ages 15 – 17 who is interested in gaining hands-on experience in healthcare and making a positive impact in their community? Applications for the ECU Health Medical Center VolunTEEN program are open from Monday, Jan. 13 through Monday, Jan. 27.
The 8-week program, running from Monday, June 23 to Friday, Aug. 15, provides teens the opportunity to serve in various roles across ECU Health Medical Center. VolunTEENS interact with team members, observe hospital operations and contribute to daily functions throughout the hospital, working in key areas that offer exposure to different aspects of health care.
Some of these key areas include:
Patient Transport & Escorting: Guiding patients to testing areas, helping them reach their rooms, supporting admissions and discharges and verifying patient information to ensure a smooth and comfortable experience.
Nursing & Clinical areas: Working alongside clinical staff to perform non-clinical tasks like patient transport, clerical duties and helping maintain organized and clean patient areas.
Clerical & Administrative areas: Managing tasks such as answering phones, filing documents, running errands and organizing materials. VolunTEENs may also assist with data entry and inventory management.
Guest Services & Wayfinding: Greeting patients and visitors, providing directions and assisting with traffic flow in hospital lobbies to create a welcoming atmosphere.
Through these varied roles, VolunTEENs gain experience, contribute to the hospital’s daily operations and enhance the patient experience.
Program requirements
To apply, students must:
- Be at least 15 years old by the start of the program and on track to complete 9th grade by the end of the 2024-2025 school year
- Commit to at least one 4-hour shift per week for the duration of the 8-week program
- Complete a total of 35 hours of volunteer service by the end of the program
- Attend a mandatory orientation in June

Ready, Set, App! Quick Start Guide:
What: North Carolina Business Committee for Education’s Ready, Set, App! challenge is a mobile app development competition for high school students sponsored by Lenovo™. Student groups are asked to develop a mobile app to solve a problem in their school or community.
Who: Ready, Set, App! is open to all NC high school students. Students will participate in groups of 3 - 5 along with an advisor. This can be a teacher, school faculty member, or community leader.
When: Registration is open now until January 27th, 2025 at 11:59 PM. App projects are due in March 2025.
How: Student groups will create a functioning mobile app using a mobile app development platform (e.g., MIT App Inventor, App Lab, etc.) to solve a problem in their school or community. They will then create a two-part video that includes an app pitch with demo, and a group reflection. Those videos will then be voted on, and the top teams will go to the final pitch competition where they will pitch their apps to a live audience and panel of professionals for the chance to win prizes courtesy of Lenovo™. Check out last year’s app submissions here.
